Walmart, Amaro, Tangerine, Rocky Mountain Soccer and more updates

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

OK, I owe you all a few things.

First, an explanation about the month of June: I got married!

It was a busy time. No neighborhood blogging managed. As a result, I’ve missed a few newsy items:

  1. Tangerine and Amaro are totally open. Tangerine seems to be quite popular already and Amaro, as of yet, lacks the critical mass of people to justify it becoming the late-night boozy hangout that I am dying for in our neighborhood. We’ve been to both places a couple of times and like ‘em plenty. Dante at Amaro made my new wife and I some celebratory drinks. Mine had dry ice in it and was otherwise mostly Bourbon from what I could tell — and my best man dubbed it the Total Protonic Reversal. Tangerine features big, delicious breakfast — which is one of my favorite things. Alec, owner of both and of Arugula, is doing a fantastic job. Have you been? What do you think?
  2. I don’t remember the name of it, but the martial arts/fitness studio that was at the southernmost end of Tebo Plaza is gone and has been replaced by a print shop.
  3. The old Flowerama building, which briefly had a sign that said “The Station” (now covered up, presumably until it opens) has been confirmed by loyal reader Andrea to be a dispensary.
  4. Rocky Mountain Soccer is moving from Willow Springs Shopping Center to Spruce and 28th on July 15th. Too bad — we really wanted to start watching some soccer games at their parties. I know, they’re not going far, but it’s the principle of the thing. This, of course, is the kickoff for speculation as to what will fill that space — it’s east of Abo’s, near Tangerine, Amaro and Arugula. My wife said Alec should open a bakery there since that’s basically the only thing he doesn’t have yet.
  5. And finally, the gossip blockbuster from the Camera: Someone apparently wants to know whether people in north Boulder like Walmart – and whether big-box retail belongs at the site of the aging Diagonal Plaza shopping center. Boulder resident Rick Wills said he received a phone call on Wednesday from a survey taker – with a Pennsylvania area code – who asked just three questions: ’Am I familiar with the city of Boulder’s plans to redevelop the Diagonal Plaza?; would I support a 24-hour Walmart there?; would I support a ban on big-box retailers in the area?’ Wills said, repeating the questions he was asked.” Well, how ’bout that? How do you feel about a 24-hour Walmart at Diagonal Plaza?

Tangerine: watching paint dry and a closer look

Friday, May 6th, 2011

We popped out for a late-night walk last night and saw some work going on at Tangerine, soon to be the upscale-ish breakfast spot for we north central Boulder types. They had the lights on, the air on and the doors open as they tried to air out some fresh paint.

Some of their signature orange paint was done where the bar will be, a lot of white paint elsewhere, and the very classy wood-panel-style design looked great. The mockup below, which has been on their Facebook page for at least a month now, is posted in the window much larger. It’s pretty exciting to see it there. By all appearances, the ol’ Willow Springs Shopping Center is about to get a lot cooler.

Tangerine, soon to open next to Arugula.

Amaro, Tangerine restaurant info

Friday, April 29th, 2011

In a press release about Arugula‘s Mother’s Day specials (PDF), there were these tantalizing previews of Tangerine and Amaro, scheduled to both go in, oh, in June or something at Willow Springs.

Work is progressing next door. And yes, we have gone over budget and it’s taking longer than expected. But we are 100% refurbishing the spaces and they will be beautiful and modern! They are going to be great additions to North Boulder and complement Arugula very well. They are slated to open in early June of this year. Here’s a brief summary of what to expect.

TANGERINE – Breakfast/Brunch/Lunch

This will be a separate stand-alone restaurant at 2777 Iris Ave., just 2 doors to the north of Arugula. It will be open 7 days a week from 7am to 2:30pm, serving breakfast items all day everyday, with the addition of sandwiches and big salads Monday thru Friday from 11am to close. Also we will use this space for banquets and private parties in the evening. So please consider Arugula/Amaro/Tangerine when you need a fantastic venue for a special event. Check it out on Facebook.

Tangerine and Moe’s Bagel: Places we’re waiting for

Monday, April 18th, 2011

We recently popped by the new north-central Boulder home of Moe’s — it’s next to the Dairy Queen on 28th Street. It has yet to open, though when we called a while back they said they’d open in March. Well, our taxes are done, so it must be mid-April, but it’s looking pretty close to finished, with some of the tile apparently setting or drying or something. Half of the menus were chalked up and ready to go as of last weekend.

The other one we’re curious about is Tangerine. That’s what Radix Bistro (in Willow Springs Shopping Center, next to Arugula) is being converted into, according to this building permit listed in the Camera:

PMT2011-00560;2777 Iris Ave.; $90,000; Willow Springs; Center Management Group LLC; Tenant remodel for conversion of former Radix Bistro to Tangerine with shared flex space with Arugula. Existing kitchen to remain. Includes electrical, mechanical and plumbing.

Tangerine has both a normal website (albeit very limited at this very moment) and a Facebook page, which tells us they’re hoping to open by June 1. Here’s what they have to say about themselves:

Tangerine is Boulder’s premier breakfast & lunch spot combining the quality of fresh seasonal ingredients with a playful and unpretentious atmosphere that’s sure to start your day off right. Chef owner Alec Schuler of Arugula Ristorante and Phil Armstrong of Hush Denver work together to bring you the next evolution in brunch eateries. We strive to provide the highest level of service and cuisine while creating an atmosphere that is warm and welcoming to all. Tangerine works together with local farmers and producers to bring you the freshest items available from right here in Colorado ranging from 100% local organic eggs to 2011 roaster of the year Conscious Coffees.

I do love breakfast, whether it’s a solid bagel (Moe’s calls everything bagels “Italian” bagels — weird or just me?) or a sit-down organicstravaganza. We’re looking forward to adding both spots to our north-central Boulder restaurants listing.
